Greek giants Olympiacos inflicted West Ham’s first European defeat in 17 matches with a 2-1 win in the UEFA Cup group stage. Kostas Fortounis scored the home side’s first goal and an Angelo Ogbonna error added to the visitors’ woes. Lucas Paqueta pulled a goal back for the visitors, but it was ultimately too late.
West Ham are unbeaten in their last 17 games but suffered their first defeat against Olympiacos. In the first half, Fortunes scored a brilliant long-range effort in the 33rd minute, and Ogbonna then made a mistake, sending the ball into his own goal.
In the second half, David Moyes made three substitutions in an attempt to salvage the game, but West Ham still struggled to find a rhythm. Paqueta scored a beautiful overhead kick in the 86th minute, but it was too little too late and West Ham eventually lost the game.
Despite the loss, West Ham still holds the qualification. With 6 points in the group stage, they are tied with Freiburg for the first place. Next up, West Ham will face Olympiacos at home, and they hope to rely on the power of their fans to get the win and advance to the knockout stage of the UEFA Cup.
