NBA officials issued a penalty notice in which Edwards was fined $50,000 for recklessly flinging his chair and hitting two bystanders after an April 25 game.
The scene took place during the playoffs, when the Timberwolves faced the Nuggets in the first round, when Edwards missed a pressure shot that could have tied the game, and after failing to hit it, he returned directly to the locker room tunnel. And in the process, in frustration, he grabbed a chair and threw it aside, bumping into people watching the game.
Earlier, Denver police said the two women hit by the chair suffered minor injuries, and Edwards was charged with third-degree assault for “willfully or recklessly” causing bodily harm. The penalty was late because of the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, which required the league to wait for the criminal investigation to be completed and charges to be dropped before it could intervene in the incident, which resulted in a $50,000 fine for Edwards.
