The Pelicans have fired Vice President of Athletic Performance Aaron Nelson, who has been with the team for four years, due to a plethora of injuries. The Pelicans have yet to identify a new person for the position, but have hired a physical therapist to join the team.
Pelicans president of basketball operations David Griffin said in an interview this week that the team took a number of steps in the offseason to keep its players healthy.
Griffin said, “In terms of how we secure health, we don’t sit there in the offseason with our mouths open and say, ‘Ah, if we can stay healthy, we’ll be fine.’ Because expectations and hopes aren’t plans, and thanks to the team owner, Mrs. Benson, we’ve been given the space to flex our muscles financially so that we can approach things in a new way. We did some very different things this summer from a medical standpoint.”
Griffin said the team hired a new physical therapist and made adjustments to the players’ training programs. In addition, the team will work with some top medical experts to provide better medical care for the players.
Last season, the Pelicans’ twin stars Ingram and Zion Williamson missed a total of 90 games. In order to avoid a similar situation from happening again, the Pelicans have made major adjustments in the offseason.
